If ever there was a time that teachers needed to stick together, this is it. I don't know how many states are adopting RACE TO THE TOP but if your state is one you are in a heap of trouble. Illinois is one. We are billions in the red and the schools…

Please know that this is a place of comfort and support!

Whatever your job title, or academic level, if you are a teacher who has a conservative political world view, the workplace can be somewhat isolating. You may wonder if there are more than a few of us out there. Well, lets find out. You probably know 1 or 2 others. Invite them to join us! Wouldn't it be grand if we could build up to state chapters that could fight for issues on our own? Wouldn't it be nice to have someplace other than the very liberal teachers' unions to go to for information and action plans? Well, let's build it! Tell us what matters most to you about our country. What ideas do you have for how we can make a difference?

Interesting teaching experience in Social Studies

I recently substituted in a middle school social studies class. As it turned out the class was studying the Bill of Rights. I asked the class to tell me to name them. When they mentioned the Second a…

My Resolutions - My Resolve - May these encourage you.

Its been a soul searching few days. I don't know if anyone else is struggling with depression these days, but I have always told any kids that I work with that you have the choice to be a victim or a victor. Lately I have been succumbing to the victim side. The "my life is nothing, my country is going down the tubes, I don't like my job, I can't get out of debt, I'm lonely" side. As I attempt to rediscover my inner victor, I feel the need to state some resolves for this year.

- I resolve to con… Continue

What Did They Expect?

For years I have been hearing about how all of the world's problems are the fault of poor teachers and poorly run schools. This is how I see it.First, schools do not make society what it is. It reflects what society is. If a child begins school at age 5 his behavior pattern is pretty well set. His teachers will spend 6 hours a day with him. The other 18 hours belong to his parents. Schools have rules but if the child does not obey them teachers do not have much recourse. I am not sure what paren… Continue

Does This Sound Familiar?

IT'S THE TEACHERS FAULT

In order to understand why most people think it is the teachers' fault that are schools are failing we need to go back a few years and see how this came about. I began teaching in 1965 and until the mid 80's schools gave a basic achievement test once a year. Some gave the test in the Spring and some gave it in the Fall. It didn't really matter when as long as they were consistent. The Iowa Basics was the test used by our unit and many others. It tested performance in rea… Continue
